Induruwa Sea Turtles is a conservation project that aims to prevent further decline of the turtle population and protect turtles by ensuring viable nesting and feeding populations of these magnificent ancient creatures. Turtle populations are attacked at all stages of their lives. Both from natural and human pressures and all species of sea turtle are now classified as endangered. Without intervention, we may lose these beautiful, ancient creatures from our ocean’s forever. The natural life cycle of marine turtles is tough enough without the added pressure from humans, and it is no wonder that their numbers are drastically declining. Maintaining a turtle hatchery is indeed costly. A large amount of money has to be spent on the construction and repair of tanks, pumping sea water, cleaning and purchasing fish for feeding. We depend entirely on the entrance fees charged from tourists and during the off-seasons we find it extremely difficult to maintain the centre, thus finding support and funding is essential for our project.
Volunteers would have to pay for their own expenses such as accommodation, transport and food. The facilities provided for them are an AC room, hot water, wifi and 3 meals. The cost per person per day is 35USD. We are located about 100km from the nearest airport in which there is an additional transportation fee.
