Gili Shark Conservation
Website: https://gilisharkconservation.com/
We are a small grassroots organization based in Gili Air Lombok Indonesia. Consistently for many years, dive professions have sighted both juvenile white tip reef sharks and juvenile black tip reef sharks year round within different zones of the Marine Protected Area(MPA), giving us a strong belief that these zones are shark nursery areas and therefore a critical habitat for these near threatened species. Unfortunately due to the high demand for accommodation and tourist activities, combined with a lack of education in the importance of and how to care for the environment, this has led to rising concerns. Some of these concerns include tourist demands that have led to excessive coastal development, unhealthy waste management strategies and depletion of corals and marine life within the MPA.
Henceforth, our aim is to promote conversation efforts through education and research while collecting data within the zones of the Gili Matra Marine Recreational reserve to assess the health of the environment and act to enhance marine protection and health where necessary. We use a variety of survey methods to collect data within the MPA. Survey methods include Roving Survey Dives, Remote Underwater Video (RUV), Photographic Identification, Time lapse project, etc. To learn more about our project and widespread survey methods, please visit our website provided above.
We host participants from around the world for a minimum of 2 weeks to assist our research team in our various projects.
